At the Rock Nightclub in Maplewood, MN
Women Rule the Night was
the evening at The Rock Nightclub in Maplewood, MN on Oct 20th, 2004 as
all the bands ruled with the voice of women singers. A night where the
all female Canadian band 'Kittie' played the Twin Cities preceeded by
'Otep' and 'Crisis' with the Twin
Cities band 'Gingerjake' opening. This is one stop on The Metal
Movement Tour for the three bands on the road together - Kittie, Otep
and Crisis. A mixture of fan anticipation was apparent for each and all
the bands. With fan comments that included "Kittie rocks hardcore" ,
"Got to love the power vocals of Otep" and "Get down heavy with
Crisis". The line-up worked well as the evening grew more heavy and
intense with each band.
Some of those in the crowd may have been there to compare the
vocals of each bands singer or to see how well these bands measured up
to male fronted bands. The women in the crowd were most certainly
supportive and hard core in tune with the bands. In fact during the
Kittie set, one gal in the crowd fairly well dominated the moshing
activity. Didn't meet anyone who was disappointed with any of the bands
even if they had a strong preference for one band over the others.
With Kittie, there is a new band and musical reality with
sisters Morgan and Mercedes out reinventing themselves with new members
Jennifer Arroyo on bass and most recently Lisa Marx on guitar. An added
contrast for the band with the dark hair aggressive Jennifer on bass
and the blond attributes of Lisa stirring up the second guitar.
With a new chemistry and a new album 'Until the End' , one can say they
have let a new cat out of the bag and are out with a new Kittie on the
prowl.
Up before Kitte, Otep dealt out a heavy set for the crowd. Otep
delivers an all out aggressive and explosive dark metal with an aim to
rattle the senses. After coming together as a band in 2000, they are
out on tour with a new album 'House of Secrets'. There is also two
videos 'Buried Alive' and 'Warhead' to have a look see. The crowd got a
solid dose of the Otep sound and vocals which are up front, hard
hitting headsmart in your face aggressive.
Crisis are out with their original drummer Fred Waring filling in for
this tour as the band is looking for a new drummer. They played songs
from '8 Convulsions' , 'Deathshead' and 'The Hollowing'. Out of New
York they moved to California in 2000 and have recently put out a new
album 'Like Sheep Led to Slaughter' and a video called 'Blood
Burden'. Karyn on vocals must have the longest blond dreads to be
found with a particular rage and movement on stage that underscores the
metal darkness that Crisis brings to the stage.
In closing, can't forget the Twin Cities band Gingerjake opened
the show on a tight stage filled with equipment from all the bands
which thinned out as each band finished their set. They opened well
with a number of songs not on their six song EP 'Paralysis'. The songs
'Karats' and 'Waiting' are rather popular with fans as Amanda does have
her way with vocals and moves well on stage. The bands played to a
fairly packed room and the evening proved to be an event where Women
Rule the Night.
