KMFDM interview 11/9/04
The terrible single trio : Steve White ( guitar ), Joolz Hodgson ( guitar ), Andy Selway
( drums )
Zin : How is the tour going so far? Have you guys already hit
Canada?
Joolz : Yeah we did, I think we had about 14 acts in 16 days or some thin
like that.
Steve : I think they where just about all sold out.
Joolz : The couple that we did not sell out though were weird little
towns, places that we would have never been to. Well you know KMFDM had not been
there for about 7 years. We were received with open arms.
Steve : And open other things… ( pause )
Andy : Yeah many open things…
Steve : wallet…many open wallets ( laughing )
Zin : How have the fans been reacting to the current line up of
KMFDM?
Steve : Lots of hatred! ( laughing ) They have been learning to except us.
Joolz : Well we have had the same current line up for a few years now,
except for the tall skinny one known as Watts.
Zin : Are you guys working on any projects right now?
Joolz : Besides from KMFDM?
Zin : yeah
Joolz
: No KMFDM seems to take up just about all of our life’s all the time.
This is because we run pretty much everything our self with the
management, we manage our self. We are pretty self sufficient. So when
we are all finished up with the touring schedule then we have already
kind of started working on stuff for our new album. Little bites and
pieces, so that’s going to be the next thing that we are going to do is
just head down to the studio and get some stuff done.
Zin : Is this going to be another concept album, like you guys have done
in the past?
Andy : None of KMFDM’s albums have been concept albums actually,
they have
just been viewed as concept albums.
Steve : yeah
Joolz : That’s because we don’t have any concepts ( laughing ) Umm god we
don’t know yet. We haven’t picked the lyrical content yet. We will still be
having the same message as always, nothing to drastic. You know we just have to
pick our new target, the next victim.
We have to read some books on it
first.
Steve : George W. may be featured in a few songs, who knows.
Joolz : We have to talk to a few different labels before anything is
discussed.
We just have to wait for a new enemy to show up.
Zin : With the last album that you guys had worked on, I had noticed at
least in the area that is was really hard to get WWlll out, and I know that you
guys had done some different promotions. I heard that it was not released in
certain parts of Europe and I did not know why that
was.
Steve : Sanctuary records
Joolz : Fxxken Sanctuary…It seems to be in high sight from Metropolis
ticket to Attak from Sanctuary’s ticket to WWlll… Metropolis is a much smaller
label, but they were able to put it out there in a much better fashion is what
I seen. So yes thank you Sanctuary for all your help.
Andy : So you can just go fxxk off…
Joolz : yeah as soon as possible… yeah they fxxked up
Andy : so we're not going to be with them..
Zin : ohh you aren’t? So who are you going to be with?
Steve : It’s a big secret!
Joolz : Yeah
Zin : I’m sorry..
Andy : Well yeah, but maybe I can tell you… if you buy me a drink.
Joolz : Wow you can see where this interviews going…
Zin : Absolutely. Well because I was reading in one interview that Sascha
was talking about opening his own record label..
Andy : ohh yeah, that already exists. We have a couple releases. We are
selling the 84-86 records on this tour. They are going to be in stores from
KMFDM records. But you know, we’ll get that label up and running in due time. We
have a lot of this to concentrate on, it cost a bit of money to get that sort of
thing up.
Zin : What have you guys been listening to lately music wise on the tour
bus?
Steve : Funk, the golden years of the seventies.
Andy : you know if you spend your entire life making the god awful music
that we make, its nice to have something a little light hearted to relax too.
And you know we talk a bunch on the bus.
Steve : So we don’t listen to music all that much.
Zin : I read an article recently with Sascha and he had mentioned that he
would move back to Germany if W. won the election, is there any truth to
that?
Joolz : you would have to ask him. Well no one is a happy cabbage about
that, but the fact is though that Bush seemed some how to cook him self another
victory. Well just have to see what will happen to the USA in the next
couple of years. I don’t think its good for the country, that’s for sure. There
has been some talk about relocation, but we’ll have to see what will
happen.
Zin : Is there any questions that an interviewer never asks you that you
wish they would?
Andy : ( laughing )
Steve : Are you single?
Joolz : Are you with some one?
Zin : So are you single?
Joolz : yes. we're free and single!
Andy : yeah
Steve : We're middle aged single musicians.
Zin : Well that’s good, you get to tour the country while you're doing
it..
Joolz : yeah, exactly! …are you?
Zin : Am I single? no, no...i’m not sorry
Andy : well that’s great…well lets have a drink latter on.
Zin : ( laughing ) alright…so why were you guys running late
today?
Steve : Late?
Joolz : ohh we're always running late, we were out in
Chicago last night and made a thing of it…we got to see a lot of old friends..
Zin : Did you guys play at the metro last night?
Joolz : Yeah It was fxxking great!
Steve : I think it was the best on the tour.
Joolz : yeah, it was recorded to. I lived there for a while… so
are you from here?
Zin : Yeah,
I am. I like it, there was actually this place that was called First
Ave that just closed down, the last couple of times you guys were hear
you played there.
Andy : yep
Steve : yeah they closed last week..
Zin : Yeah so now they have about 150 employees trying to find
jobs
Joolz : So now they all are running around
Minneapolis trying to find jobs…
so why did they close down?
Zin : Its all hear say, no one seems to know what’s really going on.
Joolz : Was that like the big club around here then?
Zin : Well that was the last locally owned club left that had the capacity
to hold that many people.
Joolz : So what’s this place?
Zin : Well most of the booking that goes through hear is all Clear
Channel…
Steve : Yeah...my friends…
Zin : Yeah that’s why I was a little surprised to hear that you guys were
coming here. Its actually good that you guys came here though because there
were a bunch of other bands that were suppose to play at First Ave that didn’t
even get another gig to play at...
Joolz : Yeah...well we're glad to be here.
|
Zin : Good, it should be a good show, you guys have a lot of fans here.
Steve : yeah
Joolz : Yeah, the only problem is though is that every time we come here,
with how the scheduling is set up, we never have any time to actually go and see
Minneapolis is all. I must say
though, that I like the sign that the Quest has down stars saying that they do
not allow guns inside the building.
Well that’s nice to know.
|

|
Zin : Well every place in
Minnesota has that sign up now,
they have a conceal and carry law now.
Joolz : So if they don’t have the sign up they are encouraging you to have
guns on you. Please bring as many guns with you as you can carry. Ladies please bring
a gun.
Steve : So is that all the questions you had for us then?
Zin : Oh yeah, I’m sure you guys have stuff that you want to go and run
around and do…
Joolz : Or we could just sit hear and look at you in that
outfit.
Zin : ohh that’s sweet.
Joolz : ohh sweet
Zin : umm yeah...its to bad the timing got messed up because there was
actually some people from MTV here that wanted to interview you, but they
already took of.
Joolz : That’s MTV for you.
Steve : I think I was talking to one of the girls earlier, she was telling
me how they just interviewed slayer. And how she is all about the cuddles and
the kisses, and how her favorite place to shop is Mall of America.
( laughing )
Zin : So being that you guys know a bunch of people from
Chicago are you at all affiliated with invisible records?
Joolz : no we have no affiliations with them official or
unofficial.
Zin : ohh that’s cool, I was just wondering.
Steve : We don’t even talk to people.
Joolz : I suppose you could get the affiliation with En Esch and all
that.
Zin : I was just asking because bands like Thrill Kill Kult and all that,
bands that you have done remix with that have worked with Martin Atkins. So have
you guys had a good meal before the show at all?
Steve : I have had a can of beans.
Andy : I had a piece of bread.
Joolz : Beans.
Zin : I know this really good New
Orleans type of place down the street if you guys want to
go and get something.
Steve : Now your talking…
