Buchanan: Intimacy on the Road
|

"Good to see ya!" - Jay Buchanan , which was also the tone that greeted the crowd
and musicians that gathered for this intimate evening at the Quest Ascot
room on Nov. 6, 2003. 'Buchanan' on the road from California brought
their warm crisp show to the Twin Cities with local talent 'Charlz
Newman Band' opening on this cool November evening. Intimacy softens the
edges of the approaching winter that will somewhat transform the Twin Cities
nightlife.
The
Ascot Room sits two floors up with blue tinted windows overlooking 5th
street in downtown Mpls. A room with two golden bronze Greek goddess
columns near the enterance and a circular fountain. A room with comfort
appeal and a solid stage and sound system for the musicians and crowd
to enjoy.
The Buchanan Quartet took to stage with an eloquent wail calling in the
set. "We are Buchanan" says Jay as they open the set with "Satan is a
Woman". Which brings forth thoughts and images hovering within the
woven strings of guitar and vocal impact. This is one of the key
songs on their CD 'All Understood'.
Guitars, be they red, be they black - - say acoustic with curves which
here echo the surf of intrigue. A cool breeze, a whisper in the dark -
- the vocals of emotion and clarity. Each song smooth across the
Ascot space. Time to slide, beat forward as a short skirt walks across
the room. A hard working touring band with a sincere dedicated
confidence that moves forward gaining interest and fans.
From the back of the room near the sound booth one can hear the water
in the fountain between the upbeats and downbeats. The Greek goddess
columns may have winked a few times as Buchanan unleased their song
"Steal your Kisses". They spread their wings with the last song which
was a version of the Gershwin "Summertime". Buchanan
will be retracking some of the songs on the album 'All
Understood' with Ultimatum Music. As Jay says, "Being on the road has
given some of the songs a new identity". Todd added that "Mpls.
,Cleveland and Nashville has been some of the best shows". Ty revealed
that he was drawn into the band by "Jay's sincere and honest approach
to music". They all spoke of growing up listening to a number of pop,
blues and acoustic bands including Joni Mitchel, Stelly Dan, Fleetwood
Mac and Dave Mathews.
They will continue to hit the road, criss-crossing the states
promoting 'All Understood' with each intimate show. Have a listen
and take in one of their shows.
